Notities

  • IR.82 formed three battle formations for the first phase of the invasion, each around the battalions of the regiment, reinforced with regimental and divisional support units. IR.82 operated the left wing of the division with sole target Belgian Maaseik, where the only Maas bridge in its territory was situated. The regiment had four bridges over the Juliana canal in its sector. At Roosteren and Born two concrete sluice bridges (which could not be destroyed by the Dutch because of the sluice function) and at Illikhoven and Asterberg. These bridges would first be the targets of commando raids. The Dutch defence at Born was quite strong though. One platoon of infantry supported by three heavy machineguns and two AT guns, partially leaning on the reinforcements built on the sluice island. The defence managed to maintain their positions for quite some time and got at least two Germans KIA, Leutnant Förster (10.IR.82) and Schütze Tatzko (4./IR.82).
  • Leutnant Förster got a war grave at nearby Sittard, was moved to Ysselsteyn (Grave AI-168) after the war, but his remains were repatriated in August 1956.
