Notities

  • The commando-raid attacks on both the Roermond bridges [one traffic bridge over the Maas, one over the Roer] failed, the bridges were destroyed by the Dutch. Therefore the 19th Division, which operated in the Roermond sector, had to enforce a river crossing. At Roermond the 74th IR would lead the operation, supported by pioneers, light and heavy AT guns and artillery. The fast point formations had been divided into four formations [A thru D], of which the first two consisted of men of AA.19 [into the direction of Buggenum, north of Roermond] and the other two were made up out of the reinforced companies 5./ and 6./ of IR.74. On the west-side of the Maas lay troops of 17.GB (border infantry) supported by two rivier casemates (with heavy MG and 5 cm guns) and several light bunkers along the river bank. The first German assault across the Maas by 5./IR.74, which failed, had been preluded by preperational arty and AT fire. After the crossing had been denied by the Dutch, a very intense pin-point shelling of the defense bunkers unrolled. Bunker after bunker was silenced after which the Germans managed to establish a foot-hold on the west bank north of the bridge. Additional arty shelling of the remaining defences supported efforts to mop up the last remaining defences. By 0900 Dutch time the defences at Roermond had been silenced.
  • Since I./IR.74 only moved in after the fighting along the Maas near Roermond had ceased, it is unclear of what Uffz Kreiensen got killed in Roermond on the first day.
