Notities

  • Against the Maas position at Wessem lay the emphasis of the 14th Infanterie Division. The division had no bridge in its sector, but was under instructions to seize the Maas defences near Wessem and lay a 16-tonnes heavy bridge across the Maas, which would become the logistic main point for the 11.AK should al existing bridges be destroyed by the Dutch. A quite strong point formation was formed to hasten towards Wessem after X-Hour. It was comprising the 2./AA.14, 10./IR.53, a company of pioneers and that all supported by infantry guns and light AT guns. Heavy support was attached in the form of half a battery of 8,8 cm guns, a flak battery and a battery of 15 cm howitzers. 2./AA.14 formed the entire recce detail of the division and merely consisted out of a bycicle mounted infantry company and a small motorized column. It had 2 heavy MG's, 9 light MG's and 3 medium mortars. The forward formations were under orders to enforce a quick crossing, facilitate the bridge construction, force a crossing into Belgium and push across the Albertcanal in close co-op with 19.ID. Opposing the Wessem sector on the Dutch side was one company of border infantry [3-17.GB] that had a few light bunkers at its disposal and no heavier weapons whatsoever.
  • Schütze Schäfer was KIA at Wessem.
